SSAI Tele-learning Workshops

Saskatchewan Seniors Association Inc. (SSAI) is excited to announce that we have once again received funding from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program.  SSAI will use this funding to offer a series of Tele-learning workshops on topics relevant to seniors aging with dignity and independence. This project will help older adults learn new skills, increase their knowledge, make connections with others, and also engage them in volunteering and sharing their knowledge with others. It is important to support seniors living in rural or remote areas in Saskatchewan by promoting digital literacy skills and using technology to connect to a broader community.

We encourage seniors to register to attend these free online workshops and complete the post-event surveys to provide valuable feedback to help us improve as we proceed with this project.

We thank the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program for their continued support in helping SSAI to improve the wellbeing of older adults across Saskatchewan.

Speakers:

Haley Collins, Canadian Red Cross

About Red Cross:

The Canadian Red Cross’s National Risk Reduction and Resilience team contributes towards efforts building safe and resilient communities by addressing individual and collective risks related to disaster and crisis events, including health emergencies and climate change. Disasters related to climate change and severe weather events are increasing. When coupled with inequalities and vulnerabilities in Canada, the Canadian Red Cross has shifted the way it addresses emergency management, by focusing on the root causes of vulnerability to natural hazards and the need to integrate disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation into community planning, development, and resilience-building efforts.

– Jessica Houle, Legal Wills

Planning Ahead: Making a Will with Confidence

Join Jessica Houle, Wills & Estates lawyer and CSO of LegalWills, for an informative and easy-to-understand presentation on one of the most important steps you can take for yourself and your loved ones.
Jessica will explain why having an up-to-date Will matters, what a Will actually does, and what can happen if you don’t have one. She will also discuss the important decisions every Will should cover, including choosing an Executor and deciding how your estate will be distributed.
Drawing on nearly 15 years of experience as a Wills & Estates lawyer helping hundreds of Canadians create their Wills and other estate planning documents, Jessica will guide you through the different ways to prepare a Will and the advantages (and inconveniences) of each approach.
The presentation will also introduce other essential planning documents, including a Financial Power of Attorney, a Living Will (Personal Directive), and the importance of keeping a record of your assets.
Whether you already have a Will that needs updating or have been putting it off, this session will help you understand your options and make informed decisions about planning for the future.
There will be plenty of time for questions at the end of the presentation.

Don't Get Tricked: Protecting Yourself from Senior Scams and Fraud

Fraud targeting older adults is becoming more sophisticated, with many scams now starting through phone calls, text messages, emails, fake bank alerts, delivery notices, computer pop-ups, and messages that appear to come from trusted organizations or family members.

This practical tele-learning session will help participants recognize common and emerging scams, fake bank alerts, emergency “grandparent” scams, romance scams, investment and cryptocurrency fraud, tech-support scams, suspicious links, and AI-related scams such as voice cloning and deepfake impersonation.

Participants will learn how scammers create urgency, fear, and pressure, and how to recognize warning signs before responding. The session will also provide simple steps to protect money, personal information, and peace of mind, along with guidance on what to do and where to report if something feels suspicious.
